How can therapy help with ADHD

Counselling and ADHD coaching help us have a real understanding of how ADHD shows up in our lives and gives us the space to develop personalised ways to manage it better. Recognizing how to harness the positive “superpowers” and strengths that come with ADHD which include boundless energy, ability to hyperfocus on areas of interest, quick thinking and a unique ability to see connections others miss is a crucial component of supporting people with ADHD and helping them thrive.

What is ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuro-developmental condition that affects the chemistry, structure and function of the brain.

ADHD influences Executive Function abilities which includes focus, planning and impulse control as well as our ability to regulate emotion. It is not uncommon to see ADHDers have intense feelings and strong emotional reactions.

Symptoms of ADHD

ADHD is a spectrum condition and this is why symptoms of ADHD show up differently in each person. Some people with ADHD have

  • Challenges with organization
  • Challenges with task initiation
  • Hyperactivity
  • Inattentive
  • Memory issues
  • Time blindness.

It is important to understand that ADHD can often come with co-occuring conditions such as anxiety, depression, low self-confidence, OCD, etc. Trying to navigate environments that are structured for neurotrypicals can be demoralizing and even traumatizing to people who struggle with any kind of neurodiversity.

This is why there is no one-size fits all way to manage the unique challenges of ADHD.
